Business Structure and Mission

Gibson Electric Membership Corporation is a nonprofit, member-owned and democratically controlled electric cooperative. Our mission is to enhance our members' quality of life by providing exceptional services that are reliable, affordable and safe.

Our Beginnings

Gibson EMC was formed in 1936 by people in this area who had been told it would be too costly to extend electric lines and provide service to the rural areas. These determined men and women joined together and started their own electric cooperative.

Service Area and Membership

Today, Gibson EMC serves nearly 39,000 members over 3,500 miles of line in eight west Tennessee counties (Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Haywood, Lake, Madison,Obion and Weakley) and four west Kentucky counties (Hickman, Fulton, Carlisle and Graves).

Member Service Centers

Gibson EMC’s corporate office is located in Trenton, Tennessee. Satellite member service centers are located in Alamo, Hickman, Trenton, Troy, Medina (open only on Wednesdays) and Tiptonville. (Click here for addresses and telephone numbers.)

Rates

Gibson EMC purchases power from the Tennessee Valley Authority. About 76 cents of every dollar Gibson EMC collects from its members goes to TVA for power costs. Within that amount is a power cost adjustment charge (PCA). The PCA includes the cost of fuel for generation (coal, nuclear and natural gas) and the cost of power purchased on the open market. The PCA also collects costs associated with any load diversity. The PCA will not generate additional revenue for Gibson EMC.
