Winter Outage Tips

Hopefully we won’t have an ice storm this winter, but if we do you can rest assured that Gibson EMC will restore your service as quickly as possible. We always appreciate your patience during lengthy outages, and we offer the following suggestions to help keep you and your family safe and comfortable when outages do occur:

  • Never go near or touch a fallen power line, and assume all wires on the ground are electrically charged. Immediately call Gibson Electric Membership Corporation at 1-800-977-4076 if you see a downed electric line or other dangerous situation involving our equipment.

  • Use extreme caution when using an alternate heating source – such as a fireplace, propane space heater, or wood stove.Be sure to follow manufacturer’s directions.

  • Make sure carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors are working properly.Never use a gas-powered oven for heating and never use charcoal briquettes in a fireplace or indoor grill.

  • If you use a generator, be sure that it is installed properly by a licensed electrician and used according to manufacturer’s instructions. Never connect generators to power lines. The reverse flow of electricity can electrocute a lineworker working to restore your power.

  • Never run cords under rugs or carpets.

  • Keep an eye on family members for signs of hypothermia, which include shivering, drowsiness, and mental and physical slowness. Call 911 immediately if you notice these symptoms. At least one telephone in the house that does not depend on electricity should be available in the case of a power outage.
